Paint the Dress
When we met with Wendy and Chris at our first consultation, we asked them about their wedding day, what they wanted from the video, and how creative they’d let us get. After that 3 hour meeting (most last 45 minutes), we knew they were going to be an awesome couple to work with!
Awhile later, while watching the Super Bowl, Aaron got an idea for a video we could do for the happy couple involving a spoof of the (hilarious) Doritos commercial. He called them the next day, told them about his idea, and was super excited when they agreed to do it! We ended up using that spoof video as their save the date.
We’ve kept in contact in the months leading up to the wedding with a chat on facebook, a quick call to see how things were going, or even just a text. Aaron and I love all the couples that we work with, but Wendy and Chris are one of our favorites! So when we talked about doing a trash the dress AND showing it before the reception – we knew they’d be game! All of us agreed that paint would be our weapon of mass destruction (for their clothes at least), since they are slightly OCD about painting their house new colors all the time! When it came down to deciding on a location, we were all at a bit of a loss. Wendy did some research and found an abandoned building in Detroit that was PERFECT for the shoot!
To make the video as realistic as possible, we invited their photographer (also our good friend) Dave Lamarand along for the day. While Wendy was getting her hair and makeup done by Candice (Dave’s wife), Aaron, Matt, Dave, Brian (tag artist), and I (Shelby), set out to find this abandoned building. Pulling up to this place, I’ve gotta say, I was feeling a bit….oh what’s the word….NERVOUS! I’m from a small town and am NOT used to abandoned buildings with graffiti and trash everywhere, especially not in the middle of Detroit! But we found a huge garage that we parked (hid) our cars in and got to unloading our stuff. Going inside the building was a trip, all we had to do was go through one of the many broken windows! We were pretty lucky that day because it was really sunny and this place was really dark and boarded up, so at least we had a bit of sunlight to help lead us through the junk.
After checking out just about all of the rooms we found the perfect place and Brian started tagging the wall with their last name, CLARKE. Wendy got there shortly after and the cameras started rolling. I cannot believe what we told them to do (ex. Chris stand still while Wendy throws paint at you – totally defenseless, Wendy stay at the bottom of the stairs while Chris pours paint on your head!) and they were not only good sports about it, but they really got into it and had fun!!! I honestly think we had just as much fun (or more) as Wendy and Chris had and I’m really happy we got to know them; we consider them true friends now. We had an absolute blast with the Doritos Save the Date, the Trash the Dress, and now their wedding! Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Clarke for letting us be a part of not only your wedding, but everything leading up to it too! We love you guys!
